Lions Clubs International Foundation
Helps Peterborough Flood Victims

Press Release from August 22, 2004

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)
Awards Disaster Relief Grant $10,000 U.S.

The Lions Clubs of Peterborough and East Peterborough and the Lioness Club of Peterborough are pleased to announce that the "International Association of Lions Clubs Foundation" has provided an emergency grant of $10,000 U.S. ($13,000 Canadian) for the flood relief in Peterborough. Add to this, donations from these clubs and other Lions Clubs in Ontario the total amount of the donation exceeds $15,000 Canadian Dollars.

The Lions Clubs International Foundation provides similar emergency grants for disasters around the world. This fund is the result of contributions by Lions Clubs from around the world.

This grant comes with conditions that the funds can only be used for specific humanitarian reasons including food stuffs and medicine. As a result the funds were presented to The Peterborough Food Bank to assist in maintaining a higher level of food stuffs available when required.

On August 19th, 2004, District Governor Eric Holmden made the cheque presentation to Barry Wells of the Peterborough Food Bank.

Mr. Holmden as the District Governor represents Lions Clubs from Peterborough to Kingston. He was accompanied by Dan Davis, Council Chairman, representing all of the Lions Clubs from the Province of Ontario.

Also in attendance were representatives from the Peterborough and East Peterborough Lions clubs along with representatives from the Peterborough Lioness Club.

Sep 9, 2004 - More input on the LCIF grant to Peterborough Flood relief from PID Gil Constantini...

"Fellow Lions, my purpose in writing is to ensure that as many lions as possible across M.D. A are aware of the Lions Clubs International Foundation Emergency Grant received in the amount of $10,000 U.S. ($13,000 Canadian) for the Flood Releif in Peterborough as the result of the July 15th major flood. Thanks to Governor Eric this was processed and received in a timely manner.Ý As a result of this flood the Peterborough Food Bank was totally closed down with over four feet of water in the building and the collapse of part of the roof due to the heavy pressure of water build-up. As a result it was decided to donate these emergency funds to the Food Bank as an immediate funding to begin the process of replenishing the food stuffs so greatly needed then and on an on-going basis. Some 4000 homes were damaged in this flood. The food bank is also fortunate to have a great supporter in SobeyËs grocery chain who have contributed some $5000 worth of food and providing major discounts in the purchase of additional needed food stuffs.

What is important, however, is to recognize LCIF and the reaction to this request. The funds in LCIF are also contributed to LCIF from the Lions of M.D.A. We recognize the importance of this Foundation and Emergency Grant process and supporting it through contributions to LCIF and Melvin Jones Fellowships is encouraged. We, the lions of M.D. A are fortunate recipients of LCIF funding and we are encouraged to return the privilege through financial support of LCIF.
